Anterior Colored View Focused on the Superior Lobes of the Lungs

Anteriorly oriented, the thoracic cavity is presented with emphasis on the superior lobes (lobus superior) of the right and left lungs, highlighted in color against adjacent pulmonary tissue. Each superior lobe occupies the cranial portion of its lung, lying superior to the oblique fissure, and on the right separated from the middle lobe by the horizontal fissure. Medially, the colored upper lobes approach the mediastinal pleura and cardiac silhouette, while laterally they expand toward the costal pleura beneath the upper ribs and clavicles. Clinical teaching often hinges on where “upper lobe” really sits on the chest wall, and an anterior projection clarifies how much of the superior lobes are accessible through the parasternal and anterolateral intercostal spaces. This is the region implicated in apical and posterior segment disease patterns such as reactivation tuberculosis and certain forms of aspiration in supine patients, and it is also a common target zone in evaluation of a Pancoast (superior sulcus) tumor near the lung apex with potential involvement of the brachial plexus and sympathetic chain. Clear fissural boundaries matter when you are explaining why a right upper lobe pneumonia respects the horizontal fissure, while left-sided upper lobe processes do not have that landmark. Use this artwork in gross anatomy and respiratory blocks to anchor segmental discussion of the upper lobes, and in radiology teaching to correlate anterior chest radiographs and CT scout views with lobar location.
