Description
Oriented to the inferior lobes, the artwork isolates the superior (S6) bronchopulmonary segments, the cranial-most segments of the lower division on both right and left lungs. Each S6 lies posterior and superior to the basal segments (S7 to S10) and sits inferior to the oblique fissure, placing it directly deep to the posterior thoracic wall in standard anatomical position. On the right, the superior segment relates medially to the hilum and posterior to the middle lobe across the oblique fissure, while on the left it abuts the posterior aspect of the upper lobe across the same fissure. Segmental boundaries are indicated by color to clarify lobe and segment partitioning. For teaching segmental anatomy, S6 is the landmark segment that anchors the inferior lobe’s internal map, because the segmental bronchus (B6) and artery typically course into it early after branching from the lower lobe bronchus. Clinically, this segment is a common dependent site for aspiration and posterior pneumonia in supine patients, and its segmental bronchovascular pedicle is routinely targeted in VATS segmentectomy when disease is confined to S6. A short, accurate depiction of S6 also helps explain why posterior basal opacities can spare the superior segment, or conversely, why a lesion limited to S6 respects the intersegmental planes during resection planning. Thoracic surgery atlases, radiology teaching files, and respiratory therapy curricula can use this image to pair lobar fissure anatomy with bronchopulmonary segment localization, including correlation to CT chest segment maps and bronchoscopy navigation. It also fits cleanly into medical school gross anatomy, emphasizing cranial versus caudal divisions of the lower lobes without drowning the viewer in airway generations.
