Anterior Definition of the Segmental Bronchus

Description

Anteriorly oriented anatomy centers on the trachea as it bifurcates at the carina into the right and left main bronchi, each continuing into lobar bronchi and then a tertiary (segmental) bronchus. The segmental bronchus appears as a bronchial tube branching distally from a lobar bronchus, coursing laterally into the lung parenchyma toward a defined bronchopulmonary segment (ramus segmentalis). Proximally, the airway wall is supported by cartilage, while the branching pattern becomes progressively smaller and more peripheral as it travels inferiorly and laterally from the hilum. Right-left asymmetry is apparent in an anterior projection, with the right-sided bronchial tree typically wider and more vertical than the left. Segmental bronchi matter because they map directly to bronchopulmonary segments, the functional and surgical units of the lung supplied by a segmental bronchus and accompanied by a segmental branch of the pulmonary artery.
