Bipolaris conidiophores rise from septate hyphae and terminate in conidiogenous cells bearing chains of conidia, a pattern consistent with dematiaceous molds associated with phaeohyphomycosis. Individual conidia appear ovoid to ellipsoid and are arranged along the distal portions of the stalks, with the youngest elements positioned more apically and older spores closer to the conidiophore. Pigmented cell walls, typical for Bipolaris, give the structures a darker outline against the surrounding preparation. Scale is microscopic. Recognition of Bipolaris cellular morphology matters because it guides the laboratory differential among look-alike molds cultured from respiratory specimens, corneal scrapings, or skin and soft tissue biopsies. Conidial shape and attachment on the conidiophore help separate Bipolaris and related genera from Aspergillus, where a terminal vesicle with radiating phialides dominates the architecture, and from Alternaria, where muriform conidia with beaks are more typical. For clinicians, that distinction can change the working diagnosis toward dematiaceous fungal infection and prompt targeted antifungal susceptibility testing in cases such as fungal keratitis after vegetative trauma or sinus disease in immunocompromised patients.
