Slender bacilli consistent with Shigella are arranged across a textured substrate, each cell maintaining a fairly uniform diameter with variable length typical of Enterobacteriaceae. Individual rods lie in parallel or slight angular clusters, with occasional end to end apposition suggesting recent binary fission. Colorization renders the bacterial cells blue against a brown, irregular surface, helping separate the organisms from the underlying topography. No flagella are apparent. Morphology matters with Shigella because you often need to distinguish a small, nonmotile, Gram-negative rod from other enteric pathogens when teaching stool culture workups and interpreting microscopy.
