Shigella spp. appear at high magnification as short Gram-negative bacilli, with oval-to-rod-shaped cell bodies and crisp outer contours consistent with the Enterobacteriaceae. Individual bacterial cells are scattered irregularly across a textured plant (leaf-like) surface, so the bacilli read as discrete units rather than forming long chains or branching filaments. Shigella is a human-adapted enteric pathogen, and its clinical relevance centers on a low infectious dose and invasion of colonic mucosa with resulting dysentery.
