Description
Cladosporium is presented as a hyphomycete with septate hyphae forming an intertwined mycelial network, from which erect conidiophores arise into the field. Along the distal portions, phialides (conidiogenous cells) generate conidia arranged in connected chains, with the ovoid spores positioned terminally and in short branching series. Artificial color differentiates the rough-textured tubular elements from the smoother, more spherical conidia. Scale is microscopic. Recognition of chained conidia and the conidiophore architecture is central when separating Cladosporium from other dematiaceous molds on direct microscopy and culture, where sporulation pattern drives identification as much as pigmentation does. That distinction matters in indoor air quality workups and clinical mycology, since Cladosporium commonly appears as an environmental contaminant yet can act as an aeroallergen and, less often, an opportunistic pathogen in keratitis, sinusitis, or cutaneous infection. Pattern, not just presence, guides interpretation.
