Its fibers course parallel to the long axis of the colon, spanning haustral segments from proximal colon toward the distal bowel. Relative to the haustra, the free tenia sits slightly raised and taut, with the sacculations of the colonic wall bulging between the three taeniae. Small peritoneal fat tags (appendices epiploicae) are typically adjacent, and the semilunar folds correspond internally to the external segmentation. Clinically, the taeniae coli matter because their tonic shortening creates the haustrated contour that guides both endoscopic orientation and surgical handling of the colon. Follow the free tenia and you can maintain the correct plane on the colonic surface, a practical landmark when mobilizing colon during colectomy or when tracing the colon to the appendix, where the three taeniae converge at the base.
