Description
Anteriorly within a transverse section through the atrioventricular plane, the right atrium opens into the right ventricle through the tricuspid (valva tricuspidalis) orifice, whose three leaflets form a continuous rim around the annulus. The anterior, posterior, and septal cusps are arranged circumferentially, with the septal leaflet lying medial against the interventricular septum and the anterior leaflet occupying a more anterolateral position toward the right ventricular free wall. Along the ventricular side, chordae tendineae extend from the leaflet margins toward the papillary muscles, which sit inferior to the valve plane within the right ventricular cavity. Commissures mark the transitions between cusps. A true transverse depiction of the complete tricuspid valve is the clearest way to teach leaflet identification and their relationship to the septum, a detail that matters when you interpret functional tricuspid regurgitation driven by annular dilatation and right ventricular remodeling.
