Rendered in three dimensions, the Coxsackievirus B3 virion is presented as a small, non-enveloped icosahedral particle with a repeating capsid lattice. Pentameric capsomeres cluster around the fivefold vertices, while flatter facets span between vertices along twofold and threefold symmetry axes, giving the sphere its faceted, polyhedral contour. Short protrusions and intervening surface depressions correspond to exposed loops of the outer capsid proteins (VP1, VP2, VP3), with the internal VP4 lining the capsid’s inner surface. No lipid envelope is present. Coxsackievirus B3 is a classic enterovirus used to teach how capsid topography drives tropism and disease. The VP1 canyon region, framed by the protruding loops, helps mediate attachment to host receptors such as CAR (coxsackievirus and adenovirus receptor) and can be targeted by neutralizing antibodies, a practical link between structure, serotyping, and vaccine design constraints. Clinically, CVB3 is strongly associated with acute viral myocarditis and pericarditis, where viral entry and replication in cardiomyocytes can lead to arrhythmia, reduced ejection fraction, and, in a minority, progression to dilated cardiomyopathy.
