Description
Anterior sectional anatomy of the adult female urinary bladder (vesica urinaria) focuses on the external longitudinal layer of the detrusor muscle as it wraps the vesical dome and body. Longitudinal smooth muscle fascicles run predominantly superior to inferior along the bladder wall, superficial to deeper circular and internal longitudinal components and deep to the serosa/adventitia, with the urothelium and lamina propria lining the lumen. The section also implies the relationship of the anterior bladder surface to the retropubic space, with the bladder base and neck positioned inferiorly toward the urethra. Seeing the outer longitudinal detrusor layer in section matters when you teach or plan interventions that depend on bladder wall mechanics rather than luminal pathology. Detrusor underactivity and overactivity both reflect altered smooth muscle function, and procedures such as intradetrusor botulinum toxin injection or surgical repair after bladder perforation require a clear mental model of the bladder wall layers and their orientation.
