Description

Anterior in the female pelvis, the urinary bladder sits immediately posterior to the pubic symphysis and anterior to the vagina and uterus, with the peritoneal reflection forming the vesicouterine pouch at its superior surface. The bladder apex points anterosuperiorly toward the anterior abdominal wall, while the base (fundus) lies posteroinferiorly where the ureters enter at the superolateral angles of the trigone. Inferiorly, the bladder neck funnels into the urethra, positioned anterior to the vaginal wall and supported by the pelvic floor. For teaching and clinical anatomy, a profile depiction of the adult female bladder clarifies relationships that drive symptoms and surgical risk. During hysterectomy or cesarean delivery, the vesicouterine fold and the close apposition of bladder dome to the lower uterine segment define the dissection plane where cystotomy can occur. Stress urinary incontinence and cystocele also make more sense when you can track the bladder neck and proximal urethra relative to the pubic symphysis and anterior vaginal wall. Short urethra. Big consequences. Common uses include pelvic anatomy blocks in medical and PA curricula, urogynaecology and urogynecology chapters discussing cystocele and incontinence procedures, and patient-facing diagrams explaining why bladder symptoms can accompany uterine or vaginal prolapse. It also supports radiology correlation when orienting sagittal CT or mid-sagittal MRI of the pelvis, where bladder filling changes the dome position but not its key attachments and relations. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
