Description
Sagittal section through the adult female urinary bladder reveals the domed superior surface (apex) tapering anteriorly toward the urachus (median umbilical ligament) and continuing inferiorly into the bladder neck and proximal urethra. Posterior to the pubic symphysis, the anterior bladder wall lies directly behind the retropubic (prevesical) space, while the posterior wall and trigone face the anterior vaginal wall and cervix of the uterus in typical anatomy. The lumen is bounded by mucosa with rugae, which flatten with distension, and the detrusor muscle forms the thick muscular wall, transitioning at the internal urethral orifice. Ureteric orifices and the interureteric ridge are logically positioned at the posteroinferior bladder base. A mid-sagittal female perspective matters because anterior pelvic relationships drive both symptoms and surgical risk: bladder descent into the anterior vaginal wall underlies cystocele, and urethrovesical angle changes help explain stress urinary incontinence. This slice also clarifies why retropubic approaches (for example, Burch colposuspension or retropubic mid-urethral sling placement) demand constant awareness of the bladder neck and posterior pubic surface to avoid cystotomy.
