Description
Centered in the pelvis, the uterus (metra, hystera, womb) appears as a pear-shaped organ with a broad fundus superiorly and a narrower cervix inferiorly, continuous with the vaginal canal. The uterine body sits between the urinary bladder anteriorly and the rectum posteriorly, with the uterine cavity tapering toward the internal os. Laterally, the uterine tubes extend from the uterine cornua toward the ovaries, and the myometrium forms the dominant muscular wall surrounding the endometrium. Attention to the uterine musculature matters because the myometrium is the contractile engine for labor and postpartum hemostasis, and its thickness and fiber orientation explain why uterine atony can produce brisk hemorrhage.
