Description

Anterior pelvic anatomy centers on the adult female urinary bladder, with the dome (vertex) projecting superiorly and the base (fundus) directed posteriorly toward the anterior vaginal wall and cervix. Inferiorly, the bladder neck narrows into the urethra, while the right and left ureters enter the posterolateral aspect of the bladder base to form the trigone between the ureteric orifices and the internal urethral orifice. The peritoneum reflects over the superior surface, and the bladder sits posterior to the pubic symphysis, separated by the retropubic space. In profile, the detrusor contour and relative thickness of the bladder wall are readable. This profile matters because female bladder relationships drive both symptoms and surgical planning: anterior compartment prolapse (cystocele) displaces the bladder base and bladder neck toward the vaginal lumen and can produce stress urinary incontinence by altering urethrovesical support. During hysterectomy, cesarean delivery, or repair of vesicovaginal fistula, the close apposition of bladder base to cervix and upper vagina defines the dissection plane and the sites most prone to iatrogenic bladder injury. A small triangle. The trigone. Use this artwork for teaching pelvic gross anatomy in medical and nursing curricula, for urogynaecology and urogynecology modules on continence mechanisms, and for surgical texts discussing ureteric entry, trigonal landmarks, and bladder neck positioning in the female pelvis. It also suits patient-facing educational materials on cystocele, stress urinary incontinence, and catheterization, where clear spatial relationships reduce misunderstanding.
