Description
Anterior section through the adult female urinary bladder (vesica urinaria) centers on the detrusor muscle, with emphasis on the pars nonstratificata (unstratified part) forming a continuous smooth muscle coat around the vesical lumen. The mucosa and submucosa line the lumen internally, while the adventitia and, where present, peritoneal serosa lie superficially. Superiorly the dome (apex) transitions toward the urachus at the median umbilical ligament, and inferiorly the bladder neck narrows toward the internal urethral orifice, where detrusor fibers blend with the proximal urethral smooth muscle. Focusing on the pars nonstratificata matters because it frames how the bladder generates coordinated pressure during filling and voiding, independent of any grossly layered, skeletal-like arrangement. A clean anterior sectional plane also clarifies relationships that guide transvesical and retropubic procedures, where inadvertent entry near the bladder neck risks injury to the trigone and ureteric orifices even when the operative target is anterior. Think cystotomy closure and fistula repair. Orientation to the detrusor’s continuous coat helps explain why overdistension, outlet obstruction, or neurogenic dysfunction can drive trabeculation and diverticulum formation as the muscle remodels.
