Description
An embryo at approximately eight weeks of gestation lies in the characteristic C-shaped curl inside the translucent amniotic sac, viewed from the left side. The large domed head dominates the body, with a darkly pigmented eye primordium, a shallow depression marking the external ear primordium, and the fused facial prominences forming the early nose and mouth region. The upper limb bud is flexed toward the chest with a paddle-shaped hand plate showing early digital separation, while the lower limb bud extends caudally into a broader foot plate with incipient toe rays. A prominent physiological midgut herniation bulges at the abdominal wall where the umbilical cord inserts, its spiralling vessels — two umbilical arteries and a single umbilical vein — running toward the vascular placental tissue on the uterine wall behind. The eighth week closes the embryonic period, when organogenesis is essentially complete and the conceptus becomes a fetus; it is also the point at which crown–rump length measurement gives its most reliable dating on early transvaginal ultrasound. Because limb, facial and cardiac morphogenesis are concluding, this window is the tail end of maximum teratogenic susceptibility, relevant to counselling on medication exposure, alcohol and infection. The visible cord insertion and midgut herniation explain why apparent abdominal wall protrusion at this stage is normal rather than an omphalocele, a common source of diagnostic uncertainty. The rendering suits obstetric and embryology teaching sequences, particularly when shown alongside the fourth, fifth and sixth week images of the same series to demonstrate progressive external morphology. It works equally well in antenatal patient education, first-trimester ultrasound explanatory material, midwifery and nursing curricula, and publication or app figures illustrating the transition from embryo to fetus.
