Description

A fetus at approximately 20 weeks of gestation lies in a curved, flexed posture within the translucent amniotic sac, seen from the left side. The large domed cranium dominates body proportions, with closed fused eyelids, a formed nasal tip, and a well-modelled ear auricle set low on the head. One upper limb reaches upward with separated fingers, while the lower limbs are drawn toward the abdomen with defined knees, ankles and feet. The umbilical cord emerges from the abdominal wall and coils through the amniotic fluid toward the discoid placenta seen behind and above the fetus, its chorionic surface applied to the vascular uterine wall; fine particulate vernix and cells are suspended in the surrounding fluid.
