Description
A fetus at approximately 24 weeks of gestation lies in a flexed, left lateral attitude within the intact amniotic sac, surrounded by amniotic fluid and bounded by the vascularised uterine wall and the adjacent placental surface. The head is large relative to the trunk, with fused eyelids, a formed external ear, and fine scalp hair beginning to show; one hand rests against the cheek while the opposite arm crosses the chest. The lower limbs are drawn up with the knees flexed and the feet crossed near the midline, and the umbilical cord loops across the abdomen from the umbilicus, its two coiled umbilical arteries and single umbilical vein distinguishable through the translucent Wharton's jelly. At 24 weeks the fetus reaches the conventional threshold of viability, a milestone that shapes obstetric counselling, decisions about antenatal corticosteroids and tocolysis, and planning for neonatal intensive care in threatened preterm birth.
