Description
The fetus lies in a flexed attitude within the amniotic cavity, viewed from the left lateral aspect with the head directed superiorly and the trunk curved so that the knees approach the abdomen. The rounded cranial vault, closed eyelids, formed external ear and fine downy scalp hair are visible, and the right hand rests against the cheek with individual digits and nail beds discernible. The umbilical cord loops anteriorly from the abdominal insertion, its coiled paired umbilical arteries and single umbilical vein distinguishable through the translucent Wharton's jelly. Enveloping the fetus, the thin amnion separates the amniotic fluid from the vascular endometrial and myometrial layers of the uterine wall, with the placental surface forming the deeper background. At 24 weeks the fetus reaches the accepted threshold of viability, making this stage central to obstetric counselling, neonatal intensive care planning and discussions of antenatal corticosteroid administration for lung maturation.
