A fetus of approximately 23 weeks lies in a flexed attitude inside the amniotic cavity, seen from the left side with the head uppermost and the spine curved along the uterine contour. The relatively large cranium, low-set but fully formed auricle, closed eyelids and fine subcutaneous fat give the surface its translucent pink tone, while the left hand rests against the face and the fingers of the opposite hand lie near the chest, illustrating the coordinated limb movements typical of this stage. The lower limbs are drawn up with knees flexed and one foot visible near the uterine floor. The umbilical cord emerges from the abdomen and spirals between the limbs, its two umbilical arteries and single umbilical vein indicated by their helical course, running toward the discoid placenta on the posterior uterine wall behind the thin, glistening amnion.
