Description
A fetus of approximately 26 weeks gestation lies in a flexed attitude inside the intact amniotic sac, seen in left lateral profile with the head uppermost and the spine curved in the characteristic fetal position. The limbs are drawn towards the trunk: the hands are held near the face and the cord, the knees and hips are flexed, and the plantar surfaces of the feet are turned inward. Skin is still thin and reddish with subcutaneous fat only beginning to accumulate, the eyelids remain closed, and the external ear and nose are fully modelled. The umbilical cord is visible in coiled form, its paired umbilical arteries and single umbilical vein indicated in blue and red, ascending to the placental disc applied to the uterine wall behind clear amniotic fluid. At 26 weeks the fetus is in the late second trimester, the period in which pulmonary surfactant production, retinal maturation and rapid brain growth determine survival if birth occurs early, so this stage anchors discussion of extreme prematurity and neonatal intensive care.
