Description
At eleven weeks of gestation the fetus lies curled in the flexed posture typical of the early fetal period, enclosed by the translucent amniotic sac within the uterine cavity. The disproportionately large head dominates the profile, with the darkly pigmented developing eye visible beneath thin skin, a forming external ear, and the nose and lips of an emerging facial profile. The upper limb is raised toward the face with separated digits on the hand plate, while the lower limb is flexed at the hip and knee with the foot rotated toward the midline. The umbilical cord spirals from the ventral abdominal wall, its coiled umbilical vessels running toward the placenta at the right, where chorionic vessels branch across the fetal surface against the vascular uterine wall. This stage marks the transition from embryonic to fetal development, when organogenesis is largely complete and growth and maturation predominate. It corresponds to the window of first-trimester ultrasound assessment, including crown-rump length dating, nuchal translucency measurement and early screening for structural anomalies of the limbs, abdominal wall and cranium. Physiological midgut herniation is resolving around this time, an important reference point when interpreting the fetal abdominal wall on scan. Depiction of the umbilical cord and placental interface also supports discussion of chorionic villus sampling and placental function in maternal-fetal exchange.
