Description
A fetus at 13 weeks of gestation lies in a flexed, curled posture within the translucent amniotic sac, surrounded by amniotic fluid and enclosed by the vascularised uterine wall. The head remains large relative to the trunk, with a rounded cranial vault, a forming external ear, a broad nasal bridge and eyelids that are fused shut at this stage. One upper limb is drawn up so that the fingers of the fetal hand rest near the mouth, while the opposite arm crosses the chest; the lower limbs are flexed at the hips and knees with the feet turned toward the midline. The umbilical cord emerges from the anterior abdominal wall and coils away from the body, its spiralling umbilical arteries and vein indicated by the intertwined orange and violet vessels. By the start of the second trimester the major organ systems are formed and the pregnancy shifts from organogenesis to growth and maturation, making week 13 a useful reference point in obstetric counselling. This is the window in which nuchal translucency measurement, crown-rump length dating and first-trimester combined screening are performed, and in which fetal movement, hand-to-mouth activity and early swallowing of amniotic fluid can be observed on ultrasound. Depicting the cord, sac and uterine wall together also supports discussion of amniotic fluid volume, cord insertion and placental circulation.
