Description
The fetus lies in a flexed attitude within the translucent amniotic sac, suspended in amniotic fluid and surrounded by the vascular uterine wall. The large, still relatively bulbous head is turned toward the viewer with fused eyelids closed and the mouth open, illustrating the swallowing and mouthing movements typical of the mid second trimester. Both upper limbs are raised toward the face with fingers loosely separated, while the lower limbs are drawn up in front of the abdomen, one foot crossing the midline; limb proportions have lengthened relative to the trunk compared with earlier weeks.
