Description

A fetus of approximately 27 weeks' gestation lies curled in the amniotic cavity, seen at close range so that the flexed lower limb crosses in front of the head. The plantar surface of one foot fills the upper field, its toes and developing plantar creases clearly formed, while the opposite foot and knee sit deeper in the frame beside the flexed arm. Below, the fetal head is turned to show the external ear, the closed eyelids of a face still lightly padded with subcutaneous fat, and the first fine scalp hair. The umbilical cord passes between the limbs, its helical twist revealing the paired umbilical arteries and single umbilical vein beneath the translucent amnion, and the soft pink uterine wall closes the background. Week 27 marks the start of the third trimester and the threshold of extrauterine viability, when surfactant production, alveolar development and central nervous system maturation advance rapidly. The strongly flexed posture seen here is the normal fetal attitude, and limb movement, plantar reflexes and periods of eye closure correspond to the behavioural states assessed on biophysical profile scoring. Cord anatomy is equally relevant: a three-vessel cord, its coiling index and its position among the limbs underlie counselling about nuchal or entangled cord and are routinely documented at obstetric ultrasound alongside biometry and amniotic fluid volume. The rendering suits obstetric and midwifery teaching on third-trimester growth, antenatal classes and clinic waiting-room material where expectant parents want a recognisable view of their baby at this stage, and editorial or publisher figures in embryology and prenatal development series. It also works for fetal medicine presentations, neonatal unit information on prematurity, and app or web timelines tracking week-by-week development. As part of a matched series of intrauterine views across gestational weeks, it supports side-by-side comparison of fetal size, posture and skin maturity.
