Description
At approximately 29 weeks of gestation the fetus lies curled in a flexed attitude inside the translucent amniotic sac, surrounded by amniotic fluid and enclosed by the vascularised uterine wall with its endometrial lining. The lateral aspect of the head is prominent, showing a rounded cranial vault with fine scalp hair, a formed auricle, closed eyelids and a defined nasal profile, while one hand rests against the cheek and the opposite arm crosses the trunk. The lower limbs are drawn up with the knees flexed and the plantar surfaces of the feet visible, and the contour of the spine curves along the fetal back. Behind the fetus the discoid placenta is seen through the membranes, with chorionic plate vessels converging toward the umbilical cord insertion. The third trimester is when fetal growth velocity, subcutaneous fat deposition and surfactant maturation are monitored most closely, making this stage central to obstetric surveillance. Views of this kind support discussion of fundal height and biometry, amniotic fluid volume assessment, placental position and function, and fetal lie and presentation as they relate to later delivery planning.
