Description
At approximately 30 weeks of gestation the fetus lies flexed within the amniotic sac, head large in proportion to the trunk, limbs drawn toward the midline and the knees folded against the abdomen. The face is turned toward the viewer, showing closed eyelids, a formed external ear with defined helix and lobule, and fine scalp hair, while the hands rest near the chin and the soles of the feet appear behind the cord. The umbilical cord emerges from the abdominal wall and spirals upward, its paired umbilical arteries and single umbilical vein visible through the translucent covering as it inserts into the discoid placenta. The placenta occupies the posterior field with its chorionic plate vessels branching across the surface, and the thin amnion and chorion separate the fetus and amniotic fluid from the surrounding myometrium. The third trimester is when subcutaneous fat accumulates, the skin loses its earlier translucency, and the fetus adopts a stable flexed posture that determines presentation at delivery.
