Description
The fetus is shown in the third trimester at approximately 32 weeks of gestation, lying curled within the uterine cavity with the head directed inferiorly and the limbs drawn toward the trunk in the characteristic flexed fetal attitude. Scalp hair covers the rounded cranial vault, the external ear is fully modelled, and the hands and feet display separated fingers and toes with formed nails. Subcutaneous fat has begun to smooth the body contours, so the skin appears less translucent than in earlier weeks. The umbilical cord leaves the abdominal wall at the umbilicus and spirals toward the disc-shaped placenta, its coiled umbilical arteries and single umbilical vein visible through the covering of Wharton's jelly, while the maternal surface of the uterine wall shows a fine endometrial vascular network. By 32 weeks the fetus is physiologically preparing for extrauterine life: surfactant production is rising, weight gain accelerates, and most fetuses have adopted or are adopting a cephalic presentation, a relationship this view illustrates well.
