Description
A fetus of approximately 30 weeks gestation lies curled in the uterine cavity, seen in close range against the reddish uterine wall. The head fills the lower half of the frame, showing fine scalp hair, a rounded forehead, closed and still fused-looking eyelids with formed lashes and brows, a small nose, and the modelled auricle of the external ear. The upper and lower limbs are drawn into flexion typical of the third trimester, with the hand held near the face and the plantar surface of the foot presenting its individual toes and early plantar creases. The umbilical cord arcs across the upper field, its spiralled umbilical vein and paired umbilical arteries indicated by contrasting colour within Wharton's jelly. By week 30 the fetus has accumulated subcutaneous fat, so the skin appears smoother and less translucent than at midgestation, and lanugo and vernix still cover much of the body. This period is clinically important for surveillance of fetal growth, amniotic fluid volume and presentation, and for assessment of cord anatomy, since a three-vessel cord and adequate coiling are routine sonographic checkpoints. Fetuses delivered at this stage are moderately preterm and generally require respiratory and thermal support, making the stage a common reference point in counselling on viability, antenatal corticosteroids and neonatal intensive care planning.
