Description
A fetus of approximately 32 weeks gestation lies curled within the fluid-filled amniotic sac, the translucent membranes forming a smooth envelope against the vascularised uterine wall. The head is turned toward the viewer, revealing well-formed facial features with closed eyelids, a defined nasal tip and lips, and a fully modelled external ear with helix and lobule. The upper limbs are flexed across the chest with the fingers of the hand near the face, while the lower limbs are drawn up in the characteristic flexed fetal attitude. The umbilical cord emerges from the abdominal insertion and spirals back toward the discoid placenta seen behind the trunk, its vessels indicated in arterial and venous colour, with subcutaneous fat giving the third-trimester body its rounded contour. By the beginning of the third trimester the fetus has accumulated brown and white adipose tissue, lanugo and vernix cover the skin, and the lungs are progressing through the saccular to alveolar stages with surfactant production increasing.
