Description

At approximately 36 weeks of gestation the fetus fills the uterine cavity, shown here curled in a flexed attitude with the head to the left, chin tucked toward the chest and the limbs drawn in against the trunk. Scalp hair is well developed, the external ear is fully modelled with a defined helix and lobule, and the subcutaneous fat layer has smoothed the contours of the cheeks, thorax and limbs. Fingers and toes are distinct with formed nails, and the plantar surface shows creasing. The translucent amniotic membrane encloses the fetus and a reduced volume of amniotic fluid, while the umbilical cord passes from the abdominal insertion toward the discoid placenta seen against the vascular uterine wall in the background. By week 36 the pregnancy is late preterm to early term, and this is the period when fetal presentation, lie and engagement become the central clinical questions. Reduced amniotic fluid relative to fetal size limits mobility, so a cephalic presentation established at this stage usually persists to labour; breech or transverse lie prompts consideration of external cephalic version. Lung maturation, surfactant production and brown fat accumulation are near complete, which is why outcomes for infants delivered at this gestation are markedly better than earlier. Placental position and cord anatomy shown here are also the structures assessed at third-trimester ultrasound, alongside growth measurements used to identify fetal growth restriction or macrosomia. The rendering suits obstetric and midwifery teaching on third-trimester development, antenatal class material, and patient-facing handouts explaining what to expect in the final weeks of pregnancy. It works as a reference figure in embryology and obstetrics atlases, in ultrasound training resources that pair schematic anatomy with sonographic images, and in editorial or public-health communication on term birth and delivery planning. As part of a week-by-week series it allows direct visual comparison of fetal size, posture and fluid volume across gestation. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
