Description
Seen in lateral profile, the male rectum is opened to emphasize the transverse rectal folds (valves of Houston) projecting into the lumen as semilunar shelves. Typically three are represented, with superior and inferior folds arising from the lateral rectal wall and a prominent middle fold often extending from the opposite side, creating an alternating, staggered arrangement. Superiorly the rectum continues from the sigmoid colon, while inferiorly it narrows toward the anorectal junction and anal canal. Relation to the anterior pelvic organs is implied, with the anterior rectal wall oriented toward the prostate and seminal vesicles. For teaching, a lateral assessment clarifies why these folds matter during endoscopy and instrumentation: they create fixed mucosal ridges that can be mistaken for pathology or can physically impede the passage of a rigid sigmoidoscope if the rectum is not followed along its natural curvature.
