Description

Viewed from the side, the kidney’s lateral border (margo lateralis) forms a smooth, convex contour, sweeping from the superior pole down to the inferior pole. Medial to this margin, the renal hilum would be oriented toward the midline, where the renal pelvis continues as the ureter and where the renal artery and vein enter and exit, even if those elements are not the focus of this profile. The fibrous capsule invests the reniform organ, and the lateral surface lies closer to the parietal wall than the concave medial border. Clinically, this lateral perspective matters because the convex margin is the surface most commonly encountered in flank approaches, where the surgeon works posterior to the peritoneum and expects to meet a smooth renal contour rather than the hilar structures. A clean understanding of the lateral border helps prevent disorientation during retroperitoneal access and supports safe planning around adjacent posterolateral relationships, including the perirenal fat and thoracolumbar musculature, when mobilizing the kidney for nephrectomy or renal exposure. Simple geometry. It guides hands and instruments. Use this artwork in gross anatomy teaching to reinforce external renal morphology (ren, nephros) and to contrast the convex lateral border with the concave medial border that houses the hilum in standard atlas views. It also fits well in surgical education materials describing retroperitoneal kidney exposure and in patient-facing nephrectomy brochures where a clear reniform outline is more useful than internal detail. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
