Viewed laterally, the splenic extremity is rendered as a tapered terminal pole of the spleen, with the convex diaphragmatic surface curving laterally and the visceral surface turning medially toward adjacent upper abdominal viscera. Along the superior margin, the profile suggests the typical splenic notches, a helpful landmark for palpation and orientation, while the opposite margin rounds toward the inferior pole. The organ’s long axis runs obliquely, aligning the superior pole more posterior and cranial, and the inferior pole more anterior and caudal, relative to the left costal margin. A side-on reference to a splenic pole matters when you need to think in terms of attachments and neighboring spaces rather than the whole organ silhouette. Splenic trauma often produces subcapsular hematoma or lacerations near the poles, where the capsule, trabeculae, and segmental vascular territories intersect and where a limited laceration can still bleed briskly from short gastric vessels or polar branches of the splenic artery. This perspective also supports procedural planning: during splenectomy or spleen-preserving surgery, the superior pole sits closer to the gastric fundus and short gastric vessels, while the inferior pole relates more closely to the splenic flexure and left colic attachments.
