Seen in lateral profile, the proximal femur leads into the knee with the patella anterior to the distal femoral condyles, while the tibia forms the medial column of the leg and the fibula runs lateral and slightly posterior as the slimmer bone. Along the anterolateral tibia, the anterior compartment is suggested by tibialis anterior with extensor digitorum longus and extensor hallucis longus coursing distally toward the dorsum of the foot, and the lateral compartment is represented by fibularis (peroneus) longus and brevis descending posterior to the lateral malleolus. Posteriorly, the contour of the calf implies gastrocnemius (lateral head) blending into soleus and the Achilles tendon toward the calcaneus. Clear landmarks.
