Description
Seen from the side, the torso of a light-skinned woman in the fifth week of gestation is rendered semi-transparent so the pelvic viscera read through the abdominal wall. The uterus sits in its normal anteverted, anteflexed position between the urinary bladder anteriorly and the rectum posteriorly, its cavity indicated as a narrow slit within the thickening endometrium; at this stage the organ is still close to non-pregnant size and remains contained within the bony pelvis. The cervix projects into the upper vagina inferiorly, while the fallopian tubes arch laterally toward the ovaries suspended near the pelvic side wall. Loops of small intestine and the sigmoid colon descend from the abdomen above, and the pelvic bone outline provides the surrounding frame of reference. A lateral projection is the clearest way to demonstrate why very early pregnancy produces no visible abdominal contour change, a point that matters when dating a pregnancy clinically. At around five weeks the gestational sac and early yolk sac are typically identified within the uterine cavity by transvaginal ultrasound, and the anteverted uterine axis shown here explains transducer orientation and the relationship of the uterus to the distended or empty bladder during transabdominal scanning. The same anatomy underlies discussion of early pregnancy symptoms such as urinary frequency from bladder proximity, and of the differential for ectopic implantation in the tubal and ovarian regions depicted laterally.
