Description
A semi-transparent female torso in lateral projection exposes the pelvic viscera in their natural spatial arrangement at approximately the fourth week of gestation. The anteverted, anteflexed uterus sits between the urinary bladder anteriorly and the rectum posteriorly, its narrow endometrial cavity still slit-like at this earliest implantation stage. The uterine cervix projects into the upper vagina, while a fallopian tube and ovary extend laterally toward the pelvic sidewall. Superiorly, the sigmoid colon loops into the pelvic inlet, and the ghosted pelvic bones and abdominal wall provide surface orientation, with the external abdominal contour still showing no gravid enlargement. At week 4 the conceptus has only recently implanted in the endometrium, so uterine size remains essentially non-pregnant and clinical confirmation rests on serum beta-hCG rather than ultrasound findings. This lateral orientation is the reference frame for transvaginal scanning, in which uterine version and flexion determine probe angulation and the plane in which the early gestational sac is sought. The same view clarifies why early pregnancy symptoms such as urinary frequency and pelvic pressure arise from the uterus resting on the bladder dome, and it establishes the baseline against which later weeks in this series can be compared for fundal height and organ displacement. Suitable for obstetric and gynecology teaching sequences that track pregnancy week by week, midwifery and nursing curricula, and antenatal counselling material explaining what happens inside the body before any outward change is visible. Sonographers, fertility clinics and publishers of reproductive health atlases can use it as an opening figure in a developmental series, and app or device developers can pair it with early pregnancy test and dating content.
