Description

Sagittal section through the uterine cervix (cervix uteri, collum uteri) centers the cervical canal between the endocervical mucosa and the surrounding dense fibromuscular stroma. Superiorly, the canal approaches the internal os at the junction with the uterine cavity, while inferiorly it opens at the external os toward the vaginal lumen. The mucosa forms branching longitudinal folds (plicae palmatae) that project into the canal, and the stromal ring thickens circumferentially around it. Orientation is unmistakable. For teaching, this cut clarifies the transition from endocervix to ectocervix at the transformation zone, the anatomic substrate for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and the target of Pap cytology and colposcopy-directed biopsy. The sagittal plane also matches the clinician’s mental map during dilation and curettage, hysteroscopy, and cervical cerclage placement, where the axis of the canal relative to the uterine body determines instrument trajectory and perforation risk. You can read the fibrous stroma at a glance, which helps explain why the cervix resists dilation until late pregnancy or pharmacologic ripening. Useful for gross anatomy and reproductive biology lectures, OB-GYN clerkship handouts on cervical anatomy and screening, and medical publishing figures that need a clean, Terminologia Anatomica-based depiction of the uterine neck in sagittal section. It also fits patient-education materials explaining the cervix, internal and external os, and where biopsies are taken during evaluation of abnormal cytology. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
