Description
Anterior sectional anatomy of the right ventricular outflow tract centers on the conus arteriosus (infundibulum), the smooth-walled funnel that occupies the superior and anterior portion of the right ventricle. Inferiorly it is continuous with the trabeculated right ventricular cavity, while superiorly it narrows toward the pulmonary valve and proximal pulmonary trunk. The interventricular septum forms the medial boundary, and the free wall of the right ventricle forms the lateral boundary, placing the RVOT immediately anterior to the left ventricular outflow tract in the intact heart. Clear separation from the tricuspid valve apparatus is implied by the conal musculature. For teaching and operative planning, this sectional arrangement matters because the conus is the working corridor for pulmonary valve exposure and many RVOT reconstructions. Congenital lesions often distort this region, including subpulmonary (infundibular) stenosis in tetralogy of Fallot, double-chambered right ventricle with anomalous muscular bundles, and post-repair RVOT aneurysm or patch-related dilation that can affect pulmonary regurgitation. Electrophysiologists also target this anatomy: idiopathic ventricular arrhythmias frequently originate from the RVOT, where catheter stability and distance to the pulmonary cusps and septum dictate mapping strategy.
