Description
Arising from the diaphragmatic surface at the lung base, the lower basal (basilar) segment occupies the posterior and lateral portion of the lower lobe, tapering superiorly toward the oblique fissure. Segmental bronchus and pulmonary artery branches course centrally, while segmental pulmonary veins run more peripherally in the intersegmental planes toward the inferior pulmonary vein. The visceral pleura closely invests the segment, and its inferior margin relates directly to the diaphragm with the costodiaphragmatic recess lying inferior to the lung edge in vivo. Segmental anatomy at the base of the lung matters when you need to localize disease and plan resection with precision. Basal segment bronchiectasis and aspiration-related consolidation often cluster in dependent lower-lobe segments, and bronchoscopy reports commonly describe findings by segment rather than by lobe.
