Description
Oblique medial orientation frames the stomach (gaster, ventriculus) as a J shaped abdominal pouch extending from the distal esophagus at the cardia to the pylorus, with the fundus positioned superiorly and leftward and the antrum lying more inferior and rightward. The lesser curvature forms the medial, concave border and leads into the pyloric canal, while the greater curvature sweeps laterally and inferiorly toward the gastric body. Mucosal rugae and the underlying glandular stomach wall are emphasized, helping distinguish the cardial region, fundus, corpus, and pyloric part by their contour and internal surface. Medial spatial relationships matter when you are teaching how the stomach sits against neighboring viscera and why that contact guides symptoms and operative planning. Along the lesser curvature, surgeons track the route relevant to antrectomy and truncal vagotomy, and the pyloric region becomes the key landmark in gastric outlet obstruction from peptic ulcer disease or malignancy.
