Description

Seen from a superior perspective, the left upper lobe bronchus gives rise to the apicoposterior segmental bronchus (B1+2), coursing superoposteriorly toward the lung apex and posterior upper lobe parenchyma. Its takeoff angle relative to the left main bronchus and the upper lobe bronchus is emphasized, with the bronchial lumen and wall contours kept clear for orientation. Medially, the airway lies toward the hilum, while its distal trajectory fans laterally into the segmental distribution. Bronchopulmonary segments matter because they are surgical units, and the apicoposterior segment is a common target in upper lobe segmentectomy when preserving lung function. That branching angle is not trivia; it influences bronchoscopy intubation of B1+2, guides endobronchial blocker placement, and helps explain why a malpositioned scope can repeatedly enter the anterior segment instead. Misidentification at this level can also complicate interpretation of segmental atelectasis or mucus plugging patterns on CT and during intraoperative bronchoscopy. Small but decisive anatomy. Use this artwork in thoracic surgery and pulmonary medicine teaching modules to reinforce left upper lobe segmental bronchial anatomy, in bronchoscopy manuals where segmental navigation is discussed, or in radiology and anatomy texts correlating airway branching with bronchopulmonary segments. It also fits well in patient-facing surgical consent materials that explain planned segmentectomy in plain anatomic terms without losing accuracy. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
