Description
Arising from the anterior body of the pubis just inferior to the pubic crest, the adductor longus runs inferolaterally as a thick proximal tendon that quickly transitions into a fusiform belly before narrowing again toward its distal insertion on the middle third of the linea aspera of the femur. From an anterior perspective, its superficial position in the medial thigh places it medial to pectineus and adductor brevis proximally, while gracilis typically lies even more medial as a straplike companion toward the knee. Adductor magnus sits posterior and deeper, sharing the same general adductor compartment but with a broader footprint on the femur. Clear fiber direction. Clinically, adductor longus matters because it defines the medial border of the femoral triangle and becomes a palpable landmark when assessing anterior groin pain or planning an approach to the femoral vessels. Sports-related adductor strain and proximal tendinopathy often localize near the pubic origin, and complete proximal avulsion, seen in sprinting or kicking athletes, alters the normal contour of the anterior medial thigh and can be correlated with ultrasound or MRI findings.
