Description
Maxillary alveolar process forms the tooth-bearing ridge along the inferior margin of the maxilla, shown in lateral view with the alveolar crest arching from the incisor region anteriorly toward the molar region posteriorly. Individual dental alveoli and the interalveolar septa define the sockets for the maxillary teeth, while the external (buccal) cortical plate appears lateral to the roots and the palatal plate lies medial, separated by cancellous bone. Superior to the alveolar process, the anterior surface of the maxillary body is visible with the canine fossa and the zygomatic process projecting laterally toward the zygomatic bone, establishing the buttress line that transmits occlusal forces. The contour of the maxillary tuberosity can be appreciated posteriorly. Bone matters here. Alveolar process morphology underpins everyday dental and maxillofacial decision-making because it determines available height and width for implant placement, the relationship of root apices to the maxillary sinus floor, and the pattern of bone loss in periodontitis. In lateral orientation, the curvature of the dental arcade and the thickness gradient from the canine region to the posterior maxilla read well, which is where clinicians plan extraction trajectories, graft contours, and sinus lift windows without confusing buccal and palatal plates. Trauma teaching also benefits, since Le Fort I fractures traverse the maxilla above the apices, and alveolar fractures isolate segments of the alveolar process with teeth still seated in their sockets.
