Description

Anteriorly, the proximal femur rotates into view to localize the intertrochanteric line (linea intertrochanterica) spanning from the greater trochanter laterally to the lesser trochanter medially. The ridge sits inferior to the femoral head and neck and superior to the proximal shaft, with the anterior aspect of the hip joint capsule attaching along it. As the sequence progresses, the femoral neck-to-shaft junction is clarified by the changing contour and lighting of the bony surface. Clear landmarks. Placement of the intertrochanteric line matters when teaching extracapsular versus intracapsular hip fracture patterns and when planning exposure around the anterior capsule. Intertrochanteric fractures occur between the trochanters, while femoral neck fractures lie more proximal within the capsule, and the animation’s stepwise emphasis on the boundary helps learners stop mislabeling these zones on radiographs and CT. It also supports procedural orientation for anterior hip approaches where capsulotomy and retractor placement relate directly to the anterior neck and this capsular attachment line. Use it in musculoskeletal anatomy blocks, orthopedic teaching rounds, or in surgical education content explaining hip fracture classification (intertrochanteric vs transcervical) and the rationale for fixation choices such as sliding hip screw versus arthroplasty. It also fits well in patient-facing explainer modules that need a simple, anterior-view spatial reference for the proximal femur and hip joint capsule. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
