Description
Posterior full-body rendering of an elderly white male uses a transparent thoracic wall to locate the heart within the middle mediastinum, nestled between the right and left lungs and resting on the diaphragm. The right atrium and right ventricle sit more anteriorly, while the left atrium lies more posterior, receiving the pulmonary veins as they course medially from the lungs. Superiorly, the great vessels emerge from the cardiac base, with the ascending aorta and pulmonary trunk projecting upward and the superior vena cava descending to the right atrium; inferiorly, the inferior vena cava enters the heart just above the diaphragm. The trachea bifurcates into the main bronchi posterior to the great vessels, giving a clear sense of depth relationships in the posterior mediastinum. Spatial context matters.
