Limbus of the sphenoid forms a transverse bony ridge on the superior surface of the sphenoid body, positioned at the junction between the jugum sphenoidale anteriorly and the optic groove (sulcus chiasmatis) posteriorly. From this fixed cranial base perspective, the ridge sits in the midline, flanked laterally by the roots of the lesser wings and the margins leading toward the optic canals. Nearby landmarks commonly included in the same frame are the planum sphenoidale anteriorly, the anterior clinoid processes laterally, and the shallow concavity of the optic groove immediately behind the limbus.
