Rendered in a three-quarter anterolateral view with a semi-transparent torso, the liver sits in the right upper quadrant deep to the costal margin, its smooth diaphragmatic (parietal) surface molded against the right hemidiaphragm. The right lobe occupies a more lateral position beneath ribs 7 to 11, while the left lobe extends medially toward the epigastrium, approaching the midline. Inferiorly, the hepatic margin overlaps the hepatic flexure of the colon and the superior loops of small intestine, establishing the familiar cranio-caudal layering of upper abdominal viscera. Organ topography reads clearly. That diaphragmatic contact matters clinically because it explains both hepatic excursion with respiration and the common patterns of referred pain via diaphragmatic irritation to the ipsilateral shoulder through the phrenic nerve.
