Description
Positioned between the thoracic kyphosis and the sacrum, the five lumbar vertebrae (L1 to L5) are highlighted in blue along the posterior trunk in a lateral view. Broad vertebral bodies stack anteriorly, while the spinous processes project posteriorly and slightly inferiorly, creating the familiar lumbar lordosis. Pedicles and laminae frame the vertebral canal, and the superior and inferior articular processes align posterior to the vertebral bodies, forming the zygapophysial (facet) joints that guide flexion, extension, and limit axial rotation. Facet orientation is the point here. In the lumbar spine, the articular facets sit closer to the sagittal plane than in the thoracic region, which explains the region’s relative freedom for flexion and extension but reduced rotation, a mechanical setup that influences patterns of injury. Degenerative change at the L4 to L5 and L5 to S1 levels often produces facet arthropathy and segmental instability, and it commonly accompanies disc degeneration that can narrow the intervertebral foramina and irritate the exiting nerve roots. Small shifts in alignment matter. A lateral overview also supports teaching of spondylolisthesis, where anterior translation is best appreciated against the vertebral body contours. Use this asset in gross anatomy and musculoskeletal modules to anchor vertebral level identification, lumbar lordosis, and the relationship of vertebral body size to weight bearing.
